Who am I?

Hi! I’m so glad you have made it this far! My name is Helen, and as I have already said, I want to help you with your hell hound, regardless of their age, size or breed. But first, let me tell you a little about me and why I think I can help you.

I believe there is a lack of trainers who are proudly neurodiverse, and in the current climate of the growth of the pet dog industry, there must be many families out there looking for help with their training from someone who understands. So, as an AuDHD individual, I am here to offer that help, to work with you regardless of your struggles.

I believe that all pets deserve the best we can give them. Sometimes, the best we can give them isn‘t what some training programmes advocate or push for, but that doesn’t mean that we are failures as dog parents; it doesn't mean that we are destined to have badly behaved pets forever or to never enjoy the tippity tap of paws in our homes and on our hearts.

Dog’s needs

At Hel’s hounds, we believe that every dog deserves to have their needs met. We also believe that only when all these needs are met is a dog in the right place for training and will training be effective.

At Hel’s Hounds, , we believe that all dogs should have certain rights and that it is our responisibility as owners to provide these for our dogs

1) All dogs have the right to rich, varied, and stimulating environment

2) All dogs have the right to time and attention from a loving and caring owner

3) All dogs have the right to effective training. If behavhiour problems are to be adressed, the right for a competant person to be consulted

4) All dogs have the right ongoing vet care for both health and behavioural issues, and a comprehensive behavioural assessment for any behavioural problems

5) All dogs have the right to ongoing education and the chance to learn new skills

6) All dogs have the right to loving family, a safe and warm home and to live a life free of fear, harm, abuse and preventable pain.

Isaac

Isaac was 1 when we adopted him. He came to us through a family friend, via Spain. It took him so long to decompress, despite him trying to hump me after knowing me only an hour!

For months, we thought he was the most chilled-out dog in the town, but what we saw as being chilled out was actually a dog frozen with anxiety. And once he started to truly show us how he felt, oh boy, did we know it.

He was highly strung, a dog who would bark at anything, the kind of dog you would walk at 9 pm because there was hardly anyone else around.

We asked for help from trainers and even a behaviourist. We were told he was untrainable, too stubborn, too wilful, A dog you could never trust with anything, not that he had shown an ounce of aggression towards anyone.

And let me tell you about the vets… Isaac hates vets! It once took the whole staff to hold him still for an x-ray, not that we knew this until after the fact.

He is now officially 15, while he is not the perfect dog, I will admit that I have made mistakes over the last 14 years with him, but that is how we learn best is it not? Isaac is happy and shows no signs of any major anxieties. He is loved, I think, well I hope he knows that, and a little spoilt, but you earn a few treats in your retirement, surely?

Meg

Meg was around 8 or 9 when we adopted her, Isaac was 7.

Meg was deaf, or “profoundly hard of hearing”, as the vet put it when we adopted her. While her behaviour was nothing like Isaac’s, she presented with her own challenges.

Meg was cheeky, and pushed the boundaries, she had the typical jack rusell selective hearing, the shelter weren’t even convinced that she understood her own name!

Unfortunately, Meg was diagnosed with terminal cancer about a year after we adopted her and she lost the fight at almost 11 years old. Not that anyone actually believed she was 10, never mind terminal until about 2 weeks before this.

My Assistant

Darcy

Introducing Darcy, my part-time assistant (by necessity).

Darcy features in much of the media throughout my website and social media.

She is a sunny, happy little girl who adores animals, loves to learn and just can’t wait to get hands on with dog training!

Having lived with dogs and cats as long as she can remember, she is now branching out to fish alongside her usual dog care routines. She would happily climb over the fence and cuddle with her sponsor donkey if only it was allowed!

She is gentle and affectionate with all animals and leads by example with our staying safe campaigns!
